VILLÁNY PDO

PROTECTED DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN

Villány PDO is a protected designation of origin and the wine region’s most important guarantee of quality.

As a closed system, it ensures that wines marketed under the Villány name genuinely reflect the character and traditions of the region.

PDO - Protected Designation of Origin

OEM - Protected Designation of Origin

Villány is one of the flagships of Hungary’s system of origin protection: a protected designation of origin (OEM / PDO) wine region governed by strict rules designed to represent the place of origin authentically. In Hungary, wines are classified within an EU-compatible, three-tier system of origin protection:

PDO, PGI and no GI.

Of these, Villány belongs to the highest, PDO category.

Structure of Hungary’s wine regions

The Hungarian system of wine origin protection is built on several levels, depending on the origin of the grapes and the strictness of the winemaking rules.

The narrower and more regulated the system, the more clearly the wine reflects the uniqueness of its place of origin, creating a more refined and complex flavour profile.

no GI – Without geographical indication

FN – Földrajzi jelzés nélküli bor

A legkülső szintet a földrajzi jelzés nélküli borok (FN / No GI) alkotják, ahol a hangsúly a fajtán és a technológián van, nem a származási helyen.

PGI – Protected Geographical Indication

PDO – Protected Designation of Origin

OEM – Protected Designation of Origin

The innermost and strictest level of the system is wine with a protected designation of origin (OEM / PDO), where every stage of production — from grape growing to bottling — is precisely regulated. (Villány, Szekszárd, Tokaj)
