VILLÁNY PDO

PROTECTED DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN

The Villány PDO is a protected designation of origin, which is the most important quality guarantee of the wine region.

As a closed system, it ensures that the wines marketed under the Villány name truly reflect the character and traditions of the wine region.

PDO - Protected Designation of Origin

OEM - Protected Designation of Origin

Villány is one of the flagships of Hungary’s system of origin protection: a protected designation of origin (OEM / PDO) wine region governed by strict rules designed to represent the place of origin authentically. In Hungary, wines are classified within an EU-compatible, three-tier system of origin protection:

PDO, PGI and no GI.

Of these, Villány belongs to the highest, PDO category.

Structure of Hungary’s wine regions

The Hungarian system of wine origin protection is built on several levels, depending on the origin of the grapes and the strictness of the winemaking rules.

The narrower and more regulated the system, the more clearly the wine reflects the uniqueness of its place of origin, creating a more refined and complex flavour profile.

no GI – Without geographical indication

FN – Földrajzi jelzés nélküli bor

The outermost level consists of wines without a geographical indication (FN / no GI), where the emphasis is on the grape variety and the technology rather than the place of origin.

PGI – Protected Geographical Indication

OFJ – Oltalom alatt álló földrajzi jelzés

Further inside the system are wines with a protected geographical indication (OFJ / PGI), which are already linked to a defined region and reflect the characteristics of that area. (Transdanubia, Great Plain)

PDO – Protected Designation of Origin

OEM – Protected Designation of Origin

A rendszer legbelső, legszigorúbb szintje az oltalom alatt álló eredetmegjelölésű bor (OEM / PDO), ahol a termelés minden lépése – a szőlőtermesztéstől a palackozásig – pontosan szabályozott. (Villány, Szekszárd, Tokaj)
