VILLÁNY PDO

PROTECTED DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN

The Villány PDO is a Protected Designation of Origin and the region’s most important guarantee of quality. As a closed system, it ensures that wines released under the Villány name truly reflect the character and traditions of the wine region.

PDO - Protected Designation of Origin

OEM - Oltalom alatt álló eredetmegjelölés

Villány is one of the flagships of Hungary’s appellation system: a wine region with Protected Designation of Origin (OEM / PDO) status, governed by strict rules to ensure an authentic expression of place. In Hungary, wines are classified within an EU-compatible, three-tier origin system:

PDO, PGI and no GI,

Villány belongs to the highest category: PDO.

Structure of Hungarian Wine Regions

Hungary’s wine origin system is built on several tiers, depending on the grapes’ origin and the strictness of the winemaking rules.

The more specific and tightly regulated the designation, the more clearly a wine reflects the uniqueness of its place—and the more refined and complex its character can become.

(No GI / FN)

(PGI / OFJ)

(PDO / OEM)

no GI – Without geographical indication

FN – Földrajzi jelzés nélküli bor

The outermost level is wines without a geographical indication (FN / No GI), where the focus is on the grape variety and winemaking method rather than on origin.

PGI – Protected Geographical Indication

OFJ – Oltalom alatt álló földrajzi jelzés

One step further in are Protected Geographical Indication wines (OFJ / PGI). These are already linked to a defined region and begin to carry the typical traits of that area (e.g., Dunántúli, Alföldi).

PDO – Protected Designation of Origin

OEM – Oltalom alatt álló eredetmegjelölés

The innermost—and strictest—level is Protected Designation of Origin (OEM / PDO), where every step of production, from viticulture to bottling, is precisely regulated (e.g., Villány, Szekszárd, Tokaj).
